Zanzibar has launched a national branding committee in tourism aimed to promote and market Zanzibar as a destination.

Launching the committee last week at the Zanzibar Park Hyatt hotel, The Minister of Information, Tourism and Heritage, Mr. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, said the committee has been tasked to promote and market Zanzibar islands as potential tourist destinations. The committee is a groundbreaking group consisting of 26 prominent personalities in tourism.

“This is a milestone to the tourism industry as the first national committee to oversee direct national interests of the tourism industry is launched,” said Mr. Kombo, adding that since Zanzibar adopted liberalization of trade and accepted tourism as a second Forex earner, it didn’t have such a platform to promote tourism as one entity.

“We used to have everyone, each of us, promote and market Zanzibar in his/her own way. It was fragmented. This committee is strategically established and very focused,” said the Minister. The idea, floated by tourism stakeholders, strategically focuses to uplift Zanzibar’s international profile and make the destination more visible across the world.

The committee is comprised of 26-plus tourism stakeholders drawn from both the public and private sectors with a commitment to excel in tourism and includes international investors and senior government planners.

Members of the committee interviewed after the launch said the Zanzibar National Branding Committee was long overdue since it was needed. “The branding committee is a roadmap towards achieving big results in tourism [at the] national and international [levels]. Zanzibar is a unique destination; it only needs a small push to achieve big results,” said Ali Suleiman Amour, a longtime local investor in tourism and also vice chairman of the Zanzibar Association of Tour Operators.

Tourism plays an important role in placing Zanzibar’s economy on a sustainable inclusive growth trajectory and has demonstrated a higher growth rate than any other sector in Zanzibar. The tourism sector in Zanzibar performs strongly, and the trend is not only positive but also promising. The length of stay for tourists who visit Zanzibar has been increasing steadily, where currently it stands at 8 days compared to 6 days, 5 years ago, according to Zanzibar Commission for Tourism data made available for this purpose of publication.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released performance figures for 2018 showing that global air connectivity continues to become more accessible and more efficient. The IATA World Air Transport Statistics (2019 WATS) confirms that:

• 4.4 billion passengers flew in 2018
• Record efficiency was achieved with 81.9% of available seats being filled
• Fuel efficiency improved by more than 12% compared to 2010
• 22,000 city pairs are now connected by direct flights, up 1,300 over 2017 and double the 10,250 city pairs connected in 1998
• The real cost of air transport has more than halved over the last 20 years (to around 78 US cents per revenue tonne-kilometer, or RTK).

It is critical for sustainable aviation fuels, new technology and more efficient routes to deliver the greener future we are aiming for,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

Highlights of the 2018 airline industry performance:

• System-wide, airlines carried 4.4 billion passengers on scheduled services, an increase of 6.9% over 2017, representing an additional 284 million trips by air.
• The development of the low-cost carrier (LCC)* segment continues to outpace that of network carriers.
• Measured in ASKs (available seat kilometers), LCC capacity grew by 13.4%, almost doubling the overall industry growth rate of 6.9%. LCCs accounted for 21% of global capacity) in 2018, up from 11% in 2004.
• When looking at available seats, the global share of LCCs in 2018 was 29%, reflecting the short-haul nature of their business model. This is up from 16% in 2004.
• Some 52 of IATA’s 290 current member airlines classify themselves as LCCs, and other new model airlines.

Airlines in the Asia-Pacific region once again carried the largest number of passengers systemwide. The regional rankings (based on total passengers carried on scheduled services by airlines registered in that region) are:

1. Asia-Pacific 37.1% market share (1.6 billion passengers, an increase of 9.2% compared to the region’s passengers in 2017)
2. Europe 26.2% market share (1.1 billion passengers, up 6.6% over 2017)
3. North America 22.6% market share (989.4 million passengers, up 4.8% over 2017)
4. Latin America 6.9% market share (302.2 million passengers, up 5.7% over 2017)
5. Middle East 5.1 % market share (224.2 million passengers, an increase of 4.0% over 2017)
6. Africa 2.1% market share (92 million passengers, up 5.5% over 2017).

The top five airlines ranked by total scheduled passenger kilometers flown, were:

In view of the forthcoming First National Meeting on Tourism scheduled for September 13 and 14, 2019, in Ferrara, the Italian Prime Minister, Mr. A. Conte, called for a table at Palazzo Chigi, (the PM official’s residence) for a discussion on the subject.

The objective of the meeting was to focus on the Italian tourism offer, strengthen planning, and include the “Turismi Project” whose objective – moreover declared in the delegated law in the process of approval by the Senate – is to enhance the variety of experiences tourism that characterizes Italy.

Those involved at the meeting included the Minister of the Mipaaft (Tourism) Gian Marco Centinaio,  Alberto Bonisoli (Mibac), E. M. Milanesi (Foreign Affairs), Ms. B. Lezzi (Regional Affairs), Erika Stefani (president of ENIT), G. Palmucci,  Gianfranco Battisti MD (FS Railways System), and S. S. Damiani (president of the Automobile Club).

At the same time,” continued Conte, “we are carrying out and implementing the institutional development contracts (the first in Puglia, Molise, Basilicata, Sardinia, and Calabria) dedicated to the recovery of ancient villages, the enhancement of food and wine routes, religious paths, natural landscapes, of historical traditions.”

In the background, the development of intermodal transport “to offer increasingly integrated services, facilitate and strengthen connections, for example, between the main airports and cities, and decrease the distances that separate Italian landscape, cultural and architectural attractions” is in the works.

At least seventeen people were killed and 18 wounded when a Pakistani military aircraft crashed in Rawalpindi during a routine training flight and a massive fire broke out at the crash site.

The military plane crashed into a residential area near Rabi Plaza in the early hours of Tuesday morning, killing the two pilots and three crew members on board and sparking a conflagration that soon engulfed five houses, according to local media. At least 17 people have been reported killed and 18 more wounded. A military statement confirmed the dead include five soldiers.

Rescue sources worry that the death toll may rise further as several people are believed to be trapped in the wreckage and some of the wounded are in critical condition, though fire and rescue teams have brought the fire under control and sent the injured to a nearby hospital. Authorities have declared an emergency in all hospitals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The cause of the crash is not yet known; rescue officials report the plane “suddenly lost control with the tower.”
