Role of travel and tourism in realizing UN sustainable goals

The leaders of the major global travel and tourism associations have today welcomed the adoption of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The Global Travel Association Coalition (GTAC), which represents the leading public and private bodies in the travel and tourism sector, attests to the global importance of the SDGs and the role of the travel and tourism sectors in their realization.

“Travel and tourism is a sector which collectively contributes nearly 10% of the world’s GDP and one in 11 of all jobs on the planet. Over one billion people cross international borders each year, a number expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030, while at the same time, billions more travel domestically. This is a sector which will play a very significant role in making progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Like the Sustainable Development Goals themselves, the travel andtourism sector is global and action-oriented. It consists of millions of companies – from the smallest hostel to the largest airline – which together forge an industry which encourages sustainable economic growth, creates jobs, promotes opportunities across society and alleviates poverty.

“Travel and tourism has the potential to contribute directly or indirectly to all of the goals. In particular, as one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world, travel and tourism is well-positioned to foster economic growth and create jobs throughout the world to meet Goal #1 “End poverty in all its forms everywhere.”

“The Sustainable Development Goals will play a major role in framing our world for the next generation. The Global Travel Association Coalition, representing the major public and private bodies in the travel and tourism industry, welcomes their adoption and the part that our sector will play in making them a reality.”

Goals 8, 12 and 14 specifically mention the role of tourism:

– Goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

– Goal 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

– Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Limited Progress Seen Even as More Nations Step Up on Climate

Limited Progress Seen Even as More Nations Step Up on Climate

The pledges that countries are making to battle climate change would still allow the world to heat up by more than 6 degrees Fahrenheit, a new analysis shows, a level that scientists say is likely to produce catastrophes ranging from food shortages to widespread extinctions of plant and animal life. Yet, in the world of global climate politics, that counts as progress.

The new figures will be released Monday in New York as a week of events related to climate change comes to an end. The highlight was an urgent moral appeal at the United Nations on Friday from Pope Francis, urging countries to reach “fundamental and effective agreements” when they meet in Paris in December to try to strike a new global climate deal.

For much of this year, countries have been issuing pledges about how much emissions they are willing to cut in coming decades. With a plan announced by Brazil on Sunday, every major country except for India has now made a commitment to take to the Paris conference.

That would be the biggest reduction in the history of global climate politics, and a sign that 20 years of disappointing negotiations may be giving way to an era when countries start to move the needle on the projected global temperature.

Yet the analysis also shows that the nations are still a far way from meeting their own shared target, set in 2010, of limiting global warming to about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That level of warming, while potentially producing dire effects on agriculture, sea level and the natural world, might at least be tolerable, some experts believe.

Making any serious pledge has been a political challenge in many countries, including the United States, where President Obama has encountered vociferous opposition in Congress. Governments are unlikely to want to reopen those fights in the remaining two months before the Paris talks. Thus, many analysts expect that any final deal struck in Paris will probably not be enough to forestall dangerous levels of global warming.

“Everyone is now convinced there will be agreement in Paris,” President François Hollande of France said Sunday afternoon at the United Nations. “But the question is, what kind of agreement?”

Despite the uncertainty, optimism is growing among some diplomats and scientists that progress has become possible. Intensive engagement between China and the United States over the past two years helped break the logjam in global climate politics, and for the first time, virtually every country is now offering to pitch in to help limit emissions growth.

Janos Pasztor, United Nations assistant secretary general for climate change, said the task in Paris would be to put mechanisms into the deal to encourage countries to ramp up their ambitions over time. Requirements for periodic reviews and fresh pledges are under discussion as a potential part of the agreement.

At a luncheon that the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, hosted for dozens of world leaders on Sunday, the heads of state and government “agreed that Paris must be the floor, not the ceiling, for collective ambition,” Mr. Ban said afterward.

Gavin A. Schmidt, head of the NASA unit in Manhattan that studies climate change, said that the history of environmental cleanup suggested that once countries got started on the problem, they would discover that solving it was cheaper and easier than expected.

“By the time people get 10, 15 years of actually trying to do something, that’s going to lead to greater expertise, better technology, more experience,” Dr. Schmidt said. “People will then say, ‘Oh, you know what? We can commit to do more.’ ”
Continue reading the main story. The planet has already warmed by about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit above the temperature that prevailed before the Industrial Revolution, representing an enormous addition of heat. Virtually every piece of land ice on Earth is melting, the sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, droughts and other weather extremes are intensifying, and the global food system has shown signs of instability.

At a meeting in Cancun, Mexico, in 2010, climate negotiators from nearly 200 countries agreed that they would try to limit the warming to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2 degrees Celsius, above the preindustrial temperature, a level that would require that emissions from fossil fuels largely cease within a few decades. Subsequently, recognizing that many governments were reluctant to agree to binding limits, the diplomats essentially asked each country to volunteer its best efforts. That decision, controversial at the time, has unlocked a willingness by many nations to participate, including countries like China that had long resisted climate deals.

India is the biggest holdout so far, but that nation’s environment minister, Prakash Javadekar, said in an interview in New York on Sunday that a plan would be submitted to the United Nations on Oct. 1, the eve of the national celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday — apparently an effort to limit domestic criticism that India is bowing to Western pressure. The plan is not expected to include a target year for India’s emissions to peak, but will be “anchored” by a major commitment to renewable energy, Mr. Javadekar said.

Bruising fights are still expected at the Paris conference, especially over money. Poor countries that have had little to do with causing global warming, but are likely to suffer the worst effects, are demanding billions from rich countries to help them manage.

Moreover, protests are expected from advocacy groups, island countries threatened with inundation, and many others over the perceived inadequacy of the deal. At a minimum, these groups are likely to demand strong procedures for ratcheting up national commitments over time.

“No one doubts that coming out of Paris, there’s going to be an ambition gap on the table,” said Alden Meyer, who follows climate negotiations for the Union of Concerned Scientists, in Washington. “The question is going to be, what prospect do we have to shrink it, and how quickly?”

One child who makes world cry and Nepali journalist

One child who makes world cry and Nepali journalist

Sanjok Acharya,New York  – Every human being in this world has a dream and goal that they want to achieve. Some people are able to fulfill their dreams while some are not. From Whole over the world. there are many victims, We can give example like syrian people who are homeless now . They loss their families and everything. From the fear of to be killing. they Travel to another countries to be safe. Many more peoples dreams did not get success because they drowned in the Sea or in the Ocean and many more were stopped by border security forces in the borders. Same like that one of the painful incident happened in turkey beach . The three year syrian baby was drowned at a turkish beach. When everybody  saw that drowned baby’s picture the world became very much sad. Seeing that news about syrian baby i became very much sad and i remember one painful incident of one journalist whose all dreams and goals have been shattered.  I am going to write about a journalist  from Nepal.  He is a journalist from Nepalgunj, Nepal named Saurab Giri, who has been in journalism for a long time, but his life is passing through a very difficult  stage. When he moved to Nepalgunj city  from the Dang district where he was born , his life came under a dark shadow from 2011.
A criminal underground outfit Terai janatantrik party Madhes  targeted journalist Giri alleging him of working against their interests.

They also threatened to take physical action against him. That underground criminal group threatened to kill on 8th March, 2011.They later attacked him twice on 29th April, 2011 and again on 17th July, 2012. Journalist Giri knocked the doors of local administration, but failed to get justice.

He was, thus, forced to leave the country fearing for his life. The Federation of Nepalese Journalists as well as Nepalese and international human rights groups have issued statements calling for safety and security of Mr Giri.

Even after journalist Giri was displace, on 9th November 2013, the same underground group demand Huge amount of money  from Giri
and threatened that they will kill him if the money was not handed over to them. After a couple of months, on 4th January 2014, that group issued threats to his family  to give  the money within two months or face consequences.

The same group  also attacked father of Mr Giri. The criminal outfit, Terai janatantrik party madhesh is still said to be looking for Mr Giri. It has already decided to take physical action against him. The person who was also involved in the first attack on Giri , is still threatening his family.

Journalist Saurab Giri is leading his displaced life currently living in The Netherlands. He is the most suffering journalist among other Nepalese journalists who have been seeking the refugee status. The concerned authorities need to know that if any journalists becomes victim in Nepal either Federation of Nepali Journalists ,  Freedom forum Nepal , Nepal press freedom ,  Insec ( Informal sector service)  raise their voice and also publish the news on their online portals.
Besides, international networks like www.ifex.org or  www.ifj.org also publish such news.
Journalist Giri’s  news was also published by ifex . This shows that the case of said journalist is genuine. To give justice to people who have never suffered but to deny justice to a genuine journalist like Mr Giri may be tantamount to the mockery of human rights.

Police arrested two members of the said criminal group but they were released on bail later. This is but true that the criminal outfit will not spare Giri whenever it gets an opportunity. Nobody else but Giri knows the real situation he is passing through. Giri, who fled from his country after becoming victim, is now being victimised in his country of asylum. It’s yet to be seen if he gets justice. I am sure that when that underground group’s any members find journalist Giri then they will not worship him, they will harm him.

I met journalist Giri in The Netherlands and listened to his story. A news was also published in the Nepali edition of the Gorkhapatra daily. National and local news agencies of Nepal  have published the news about ‘Giri’s security and justice.

At this current situation journalist Giri is passing his life through very difficult stage being illegal. He goes in depression  without getting any justice and being sick from the lung disease regular two times .He took the   medicine of lung for almost twenty months. At this time he is using the high doze depression  medicine. Journalist Giri ,who  was seeking for beautiful and safe life was admitted in Hospital, Three times in Netherlands for more then one year. He is victim journalist, but he did not get justice. He only knows the pain of his victim life, staying illegal in abroad.
