Industry to use available capacity in fight against COVID-19

London Heathrow will be stepping up its cargo capabilities as it calls on more airlines and freight companies to maximise the use of the hub airport’s quieter schedule so that the aviation industry can play its part in the economic and social fight against COVID-19. Airfreight will keep vital supply lines open and help to get time-critical and temperature-sensitive goods, such as medical supplies and food across the UK as the country pulls together to battle this pandemic.

Logistics companies have already begun playing a key role in this fight, by importing COVID-19 testing kits via Heathrow, in preparation for increased demand. Next week, Heathrow’s cargo movements are forecast to increase by 53%, as more airlines and freighters use the available capacity to transport goods which will assist in the fight against coronavirus. This figure is set to increase further as the airport scales up its cargo operation. Pharmaceutical products are one of Heathrow’s top imports, with the airport handling 41% of the UK’s pharmaceutical imports (by value). In 2019, over 12,000 tonnes of medical supplies such as medicines, vaccines, sanitizers, syringes, and respirators traveled through Heathrow.

During normal operations, Heathrow is the UK’s largest port by value. 34% of the country’s cargo travels through the airport, with the majority of that cargo (95%) being carried in the belly hold of passenger planes. Whilst passenger travel remains restricted for many, airports will continue to play a key role in keeping the UK’s supply chain alive, for both essential workers and goods. This is why Heathrow will be repurposing its operation and scaling up its cargo offering at this difficult time.

Heathrow is also taking a number of steps to assist the airline industry during this challenging time. These steps include supporting slot alleviation – a relaxation of the rules requiring airlines to use their slots to keep them, offering free parking to aircraft grounded as a result of COVID-19 and bringing forward growth incentive payments which have helped to increase cash flow for airlines during a challenging time for the sector.

Before becoming a civilian airport in 1946, Heathrow was one of the country’s military airfields. The aerodrome served military aircraft bound for the Far East, helping to transport troops, supplies and care packages. Now that the country works to battle the coronavirus pandemic, the airport will support the nation once again by helping the country to receive testing kits, protection equipment and crucial machinery such as respirators, as the UK works to overcome the outbreak.

Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye, said: “This is an unprecedented time for the international community, with COVID-19 requiring us all to work together, adapt and adopt extraordinary measures to quell the spread of this virus. For the first time in a decade, our airport has additional capacity in its schedule, a capacity which we’ve begun to see used to help push vital supplies across the globe to help support frontline teams in the battle against this pandemic.

“We stand ready to support the country through this crisis. Our intention is to remain open at all times to serve those passenger flights that will continue to operate. And as the UK’s biggest port, we will temporarily increase the number of dedicated cargo flights. These will bring in vital supplies of food and medical equipment to help Britain weather this storm.”

  • The UK’s largest port ramps up cargo capacity and safeguards vital supply lines needed to get medical goods and food to the nation as it tackles the global COVID-19 epidemic
  • Logistics companies have already begun importing key equipment such as COVID-19 testing kits via Heathrow, in preparation for increased demand
  • Next week, cargo movements at Heathrow are forecast to surge by 53%, compared to the weekly average, as the airport prioritises cargo flights with medical supplies which will assist in the fight against COVID-19
  • 41% of the UK’s pharmaceutical products such as medicines, vaccines and respirators are imported via Heathrow Airport – Britain’s front door.

China flights will cost Russian airlines $25.2 million

Russia’s Deputy Transport Minister Alexander Yurchik announced today that Russian national air carriers stand to lose 1.6 billion rubles ($25.2 million) due to suspension of flights to China.

“These are calculations by the Transport Ministry together with the airlines,” he said. But, according to the official, this is not the final figure. “There is a quite difficult discussion with the financial and economic bloc of the government, because it is difficult to determine how to calculate losses,” he said.

On February 1, air traffic between Russia and China was limited to minimize the risks of the spread of coronavirus. Only Aeroflot, four Chinese airlines operate Sheremetyevo’s China-bound flights. All flights to China are served only at terminal. Until February 1, by Iraero, Aurora, Yakutia, Ural Airlines and Siberia (S7 Airlines) conducted direct flights between Moscow and China alongside with Aeroflot.

Air Partner delivering humanitarian

Air Partner’s Freight team has been extremely busy in 2018, delivering relief goods and humanitarian aid to those in need across the globe. Missions included flights between Europe and Libya, Yemen, Central Africa, as well as between various African countries and from the US to the Mariana Islands in the Pacific. A large bulk of this activity took place during this year’s typhoon season and in response to Typhoons Mangkhut and Yutu, for which Air Partner coordinated the transport and delivery of more than 2000 tons of relief cargo from the US to Guam and Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands.

In September, Air Partner was contacted by Radiant Global Logistics to assist with the safe and speedy delivery of supplies to Guam in preparation for Super Typhoon Mangkhut. Air Partner carried out a number of flights on AN-225 and AN-124 aircraft to help move urgent relief supplies, including water and meals ready-to-eat (MRE).

Wiley Knight, director of Humanitarian Aid for Radiant Global Logistics, commented: “Through the support and quality of service that Air Partner provides, we were able to successfully complete these projects within 24 hrs after the storm passed. Our partnership and the absolutely essential understanding of rapid response is exactly what we needed to fulfil our missions.”

The following month, in the wake of Super Typhoon Yutu, Air Partner was tasked with delivering a wide array of aid supplies and heavy-duty equipment to rebuild the island of Saipan. The team mobilized quickly and successfully completed more than 30 flights in less than 30 days using AN124 and B747F aircraft.  Flying cargo to this remote location was particularly challenging, and due to the size of the relief effort plus the volume of flying conducted, Air Partner stationed a member of its team on the island of Guam to personally co-ordinate the organisation, delivery and upload of all cargo from the appointed freight forwarder of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in a timely manner, without delay. This enabled Air Partner to deliver the most efficient cargo charter service to its client at this critical time.

Mike Hill, Director of Freight at Air Partner, said: “In times of crisis, we are the trusted partner for a wide range of clients. During a year of such devastating natural disasters, my thanks goes to the Freight team for their tireless efforts to get much-needed aid to those desperately in need, as quickly as possible.”

ISRO successfully launches earth satellite

Dding another feather to its cap, ISRO’s workhorse rocket PSLV-C43 Thursday successfully injected into orbit India’s earth observation satellite HysIS.The Hyper Spectral Imaging Satellite (HysIS), an earth observation satellite developed by ISRO, is the primary satellite of the PSLV-C43 mission. The mass of the spacecraft is about 380 kg, the space agency said adding that the satellite would be placed in 636 km-polar sun synchronous orbit with an inclination of 97.957 degree.

The co-passengers of HysIS include 1 micro and 29 nano satellites from eight different countries. All these satellites have been commercially contracted for launch through ISRO’s commercial arm Antrix Corporation Limited. PSLV-C43, which is the 45th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), is the ‘Core Alone’ version of PSLV. It is the lightest version of the launch vehicle. The 30 other co-passenger international satellites including those from the United States of America and Australia among others, will soon be placed into orbit.  The space agency had launched its latest communication satellite GSAT-29 on board GSLV MkIII-D2 on November 14.

The primary goal of HysIS, whose mission life is five years, is to study the earth’s surface in visible near infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
