Aeromexico Airline and Pilots Union Still At Odds

Aeromexico airline and pilots union, Asociación Sindical de Pilotos Aviadores de Mexico (ASPA) which represents Mexican pilots, are still at odds over current negotiations. Agreement is necessary in order for the airline to meet the commitments and objectives required by bankruptcy lenders allowing the company to access subsequent disbursements under the Senior Debtor in Possession Credit Facility (DIP Financing).

Aeromexico (Grupo Aeroméxico, S.A.B. de C.V.) must continue negotiations with ASPA in order to reach agreement during the 7-day grace period established at the Credit Agreement (Cure Period).

The airline announced that following its previous relevant event dated December 29, 2020, although significant progress has been made in the negotiations of the new Collective Bargaining Agreements, necessary adjustments to face the adverse effects caused to the airline industry due to the global pandemic of COVID-19, negotiations with all unions that have not yet concluded, pursuant to the milestones required by the lenders to access disbursements under the Senior Debtor in Possession Credit Facility (DIP Financing), obtained within its voluntary financial restructuring process under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code of the United States of America.

Uganda Airlines Rolls Out Brand New A330neo

Ugandans got a glimpse of the first of the two Uganda Airlines A330neo aircraft – the A330-800 – being rolled out of the yard after branding in national colors. This was posted on the AirbusNeo330 facebook page prompting euphoric response on social media.

A tweet on the official Uganda airlines page stated, “Soon General Wamala (Uganda’s Works and Transport Minister) will be leading a team to France to flag off the bird home.”

Before the lockdown and closure of Entebbe International Airport due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline was flying to Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salam, and Mogadishu and had planned for Harare, Kigali, Zanzibar, and Kilimanjaro airports as part of its regional destinations.

Uganda Airlines plans to use the A330-800 to build its medium- and long-haul networks with the aircraft offering cutting-edge technology along with more efficient operations. This shall add to the existing fleet of four Bombardier CRJ 900 Atmosphere cabin models that were ordered prior to the launch of the airline in April 2019.

Cornwell Muleya,  Acting CEO of Uganda Airlines, said they hope to receive the wide-body aircraft by December, a slight delay from the earlier plan of October 2020 – consequently pushing the start of international flights to next year. Muleya said, “We’re targeting that we receive the aircraft in the last quarter of the year, at least by December, so that early in the New Year, we can launch our operations.”There has been uncertainty as to whether the orders would be confirmed as the COVID-9 pandemic had ground international travel to a screeching halt.

However, Maleya in an earlier press conference prior to the one-year anniversary said the airline shall continue with its plans to make its mark on the African continent and beyond.

“Our plans are ongoing and on course [with what] we committed at the beginning – that in addition to developing the regional networks of which we have developed nine, we still have a few more to get to the eighteen or twenty that we require for Africa. We said we are going to extend the network to intercontinental destinations; we want to go to London, we want to go to Dubai, we want to go to Guangzhou with the A330s. As a start, we also want to connect to West Africa and Southern Africa where that capacity is required.”

Fitted with the new Airspace by Airbus cabin, the A330neo will bring a range of benefits to Uganda Airlines and its customers, offering unrivaled efficiencies combined with the most modern cabin.

The A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce’s latest-generation Trent 7000 engines and features a new wing with increased span and new A350 XWB-inspired Sharklets. The cabin provides the comfort of the new Airspace amenities including state-of-the-art passenger inflight entertainment and Wi-Fi connectivity systems, among others.

Qatar Airways to resume Guangzhou flights from 26 July

Qatar Airways announced that it will resume Guangzhou scheduled passenger services with an initial one weekly flight starting 26 July. The Southern China economic and commercial centre becomes the latest destination to join the global network the airline is gradually rebuilding, in addition to the recently announced flight resumptions to Bali, Maldives, Beirut, Belgrade, Berlin, Edinburgh, Larnaca, Prague, Zagreb, Ankara, Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Bucharest, Sofia and Venice.

The much-anticipated resumption of Guangzhou passenger flights will further enhance the airline’s commitment to the Chinese market by providing passengers access between Doha, China and beyond via the airline’s award-winning hub, Hamad International Airport (HIA), which was recently voted ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ for the sixth year in a row  by the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards 2020.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “The resumption of Guangzhou passenger services is one of the significant steps taken by Qatar Airways to demonstrate our confidence in the gradual recovery of the regional travel market and global connectivity. Since the COVID-19 crisis started, we have challenged ourselves to be at the forefront and combat the effects of this global pandemic, by volunteering our services to deliver worldwide medical supplies coordinated by Chinese Embassies and Consulates.

“Qatar Airways been closely working with the local authorities to secure regulatory approval and ensure we are staying up to date with the latest in airport procedures and the most advanced safety and hygiene measures onboard. The return of Guangzhou in our international network will help to re-establish the connection between Doha and China that directly benefits our customers and trade partners. We continue to uphold our core mission of being the trusted airline that gets people home safely and look forward to further strengthening our schedule to China by increasing frequencies and destinations as operating environment permits.”

The airline’s share of the passenger and air cargo market has grown significantly over the past three months. Qatar Airways has remained in operation throughout the COVID-19 crisis, and has operated a significant schedule of over 17,000 flights, including over 300 special charters to more than two million people home globally. The airline has also been running a robust cargo operation globally, with up to 180 dedicated cargo flights daily, and has transported over 580,000 tonnes of cargo all around the world.

Qatar Airways has further enhanced its onboard safety measures for passengers and cabin crew, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suits for cabin crew while onboard, as well as a modified service that reduces interactions between the passengers and the crew inflight. Cabin Crew have already been wearing PPE during flights, including gloves and facemasks. Recently, Qatar Airways has also introduced new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits for passengers that include a facemask, disposable gloves and hand sanitiser. In addition, passengers will be provided a face shield visor, available in adult and children size, for their use in conjunction with facemask during flights.

“In addition to scheduled freighter services, we have also operated a large number of charters and freight-only passenger aircraft to meet China’s surging demand for imports and exports. With the resumption of passenger flights, we will have 52 flights in total, comprising of passenger freighters, belly-hold cargo flights and freighters in and out of Mainland China each week, providing more than 2500 tons of weekly cargo capacity each way.” The airline recently announced plans to gradually rebuild its network in line with the evolution of passenger demand and the expected relaxation of entry restrictions around the world. By the end of July, the airline plans to expand its network to over 70 destinations.
