Dharahara Construction Near Final

Kathmandu : Dharahara also called Bhimsen Tower, is a nine story (50.2m) tall tower at the center of Kathmandu. It was built in 1832 A.D. by the Prime Minister of the time, Bhimsen Thapa of Nepal. Thapa built the tower under the orders of Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari. The tower has a spiral staircase inside containing 113 steps or none because there is an elevator. The 8th floor holds a circular balcony for observers that provides a panoramic view of the whole Kathmandu valley. The tower has a 5.2m bronze mast on the roof. The tower has been open for the general public since 2005 for a small fee.

Dharahara is actually the second such tower made by Bhimsen Thapa. The original Bhimsen Tower was built in 1824 and was 11 stories high, 2 stories taller than Dharahara. Dharahara was built for queen Lalit Tripura Sundari, who was the niece of Bhimsen Thapa. She wanted a tower of her own next to Bhimshen’s Dharahara.Dharahara: The Pride of Kathmandu Valley

During the earthquake of 1834, both the towers survived, but Bhimsen’s tower suffered severe damage. 110 years later, on January 15, 1934, another earthquake caused Bhimsen’s tower to be completely destroyed.Only 2 of the 11 stories on the second tower remained. The prime minister of the time, Juddha Shumsher, renovated Dharahara to its previous form. While the original Bhimsen Tower was obliterated, queen Lalit Tripura Sundari’s tower got its name, ‘Bhimsen Stambha’.

The designs were prepared by Cage Consult Pvt. Ltd and JV Associates. According to the Dharahara reconstruction plan, the new Dharahara would be 245 ft. tall with 11-storeys. However, according to Architect Bishnu Panthi, it would be of 21-storeyed from the inside.

The estimated cost of the project is three Billion rupees and will be constructed in three years. According to Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Ananda Pokharel, many private organisations and Nepal Telecom have expressed their interest in financing the project. Also, Rs20 million has been collected from the campaign ‘I will build my Dharahara’, Minister Pokharel said.

The government has allocated 42 Ropanis land for the reconstruction of the Dharahara. Department of Archaeology had been seeking additional land from government citing that reconstructing new Dharahara in existing five Ropanis would look dull. The required additional land will be supplemented by acquiring the land of General Post Office and Taksar Department in Sundhara and the decision to this effect has been made by Cabinet, according Minister Ananda Pokharel.

Minsiter Pokharel claimed the new Dharahara would be earthquake resistant and could sustain up to 8 magnitude earthquake.

According to engineer Panthi, a Sundhara Garden will be built at the premises where a three-storeyed parking hall will be constructed. It will also house a water fountain, gift shop, a theater and a museum. The Dharahara area will be disabled-friendly, it is learnt.

The historic Dharahara, a popular landmark of Kathmandu, was destroyed by the April 25 earthquake last year. The original Dharahara, or also known as Bhimsen Tower, was 11-storeyed before 1934 earthquake reduced it to just nine storeys.

The old Dharahara wrecked by the earthquake will be kept intact while a new one with similar design will be built at the premise, it was announced in the programme.

New life, new tourists

At the completion of the 61st year of the Revolution, Havana celebrated its glorious 5th century of life. The hashtag “500” recalled this year in every corner of the city.

The event was witnessed by an audience of diplomats and government representatives who came from Russia, France, the Gulf countries, and Spain with their ruler S.A.R. Felipe VI and his wife Letizia Ortiz. The event was held in front of the capitol returned to its former glory and which is today the seat of the National Assembly of Cuba.

Havana, defined city of Peace and Dignity, has highlighted its pride in the eyes of the world and its people, which has always been indomitable in the face of attempts to destabilize it. As evidence of its resistance are the cannons placed in a defensive position around the perimeter walls of the Castillo de Los Tres Reyes del Morro. This is a mammoth fortification in front of the Bay of Havana designed by the Italian Ing. Battista Antonelli. It was built in the 16th century to defend the city from invasions. Today,  cannons – symbols of defense – are still scattered in the streets and squares of its historic center.

Let the ceremony begin

The ceremony was presided over by Army General Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba; President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez; and Second Party Secretary, Josè Ramòn Machado Ventura.

Addressing the guests and the thousands of citizens and tourists who crowded the borders of a large cordoned area, the President of the Republic recalled at the end of his speech, “Havana, beautiful and sensitive, hospitable and safe for its residents and its visitors, is the city of science, dance, cinema, literature, sporting events, [an] example of resistance before neoliberalism and imperialism.”

The guests of honor, Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko, President of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation; Abulahaewab A. Al Bader, Gen. Director of the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development; and Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, General Director of the Organization Fund of the Petroleum Exporting Countries for International Development were received by Gen. Raul Castro Ruz and the President of the Republic privately for possible economic agreements, as reported by the local press.

The occurrence of the forecast will be able to revive the economic fortunes of Cuba subjected to strict restrictions due to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America.

A recognition to the architect of renewal

At the historic city of Havana, Eusebio Leal was awarded the Honorary Doctorate in Juridical Sciences – History of Law by the Pontifical Lateran University of Havana. The academic act took place in the presence of the highest local religious and diplomatic authorities in addition to Jorge Quesata and José Carlos Rodríguez, Cuban ambassadors to the Holy See (Vatican City). Dr E. Leal has strongly contributed to the restoration project of over 1,000 buildings in the historic center and to the restoration of the capitol and monument work with the financial contribution of the Federation of Russia.

The pride of the Cuban people

Reinaldo Garcia Sapada, President of the provincial assembly of popular power in the capital, said, “Havana has been able to preserve the architectural heritage of its colonial past, the one that the traveler loves to admire and that its inhabitants live in worship.”

The largely-restored historical, architectural, and cultural heritage has transformed the city into an increasingly important tourist site. Its historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, is one of the best preserved in Latin America. Among its most representative monuments are the Cathedral of Havana, Plaza de Armas, the Castle of the Morro, the Museum of the Revolution, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Grand Theatre of Havana, the Capitol, the Plaza of the Revolution, and the Malecón (waterfront) being perhaps the most internationally-recognized symbol of the city.

The 500th anniversary of Havana seems to have aroused the interest of tourists from Asian countries, Europe, Central and South America, and from the USA despite the travel restrictions in force. And with surprise we note the presence of Millennials prevailing over those of the third age. All share a common goal: to enter into symbiosis with the character of the Cubans, to share their carefree mood, and be open to dialogue and availability.

The presence of the historic center

One guitar and two voices in every corner of the historic center and in all the meeting points enchant tourists as much as the vision of vintage cars left over from an era of Amistad with the USA and the stimulating phrases extolling the Freedom and the Revolution signed with the image of his heroes on the walls of houses.

All sympathizers with people that live with situations that are different from the luckier ones in the west but with great dignity and pride for their country. It took little to have this confirmation.

The day of the 500th anniversary closing celebrations cheered the people of Havana with music and shows organized in various areas of the city. Fireworks drew usual shapes and never-seen-before geometric shapes in the sky – the same ones that illuminated Italia Avenue (alias Galiano Street) for a few nights. A light show depicting “constellations” was a gift from the city of Turin (Italy) for this multi-centennial celebration.

Philadelphia Tourism highest number of overseas visitors in 2018

More visitors, more direct dollars infused into Philadelphia’s economy. That’s the synopsis of a new report from the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) and Tourism Economics. In 2018, 697,000 overseas visitors — a 7.5% year-on-year (YoY) increase — came to the Greater Philadelphia region, marking the fourth consecutive year of growth. Overseas visitors also contributed $723 million in direct visitor spending, generating $1.2 billion in economic impact, both modern-day records.

“Hospitality is one of the largest and fastest growing employment sectors in Philadelphia because we continue to see visitation rise across all sectors. Overseas visitors are incredibly important as they account for 57% of all international visitation and 79% of all international visitor spending,” said PHLCVB President and CEO Julie Coker Graham. “Every day our team is focused on telling Philadelphia’s story globally. In 2018 our team hosted 96 influential global media and 334 travel trade professionals in-market. By doing so, we’re able to reinforce positive perceptions of the city and encourage and inspire future visitation.”

The PHLCVB also works in concert with local industry partners like the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, Visit Philadelphia and the Philadelphia International Airport. The destination’s collective message is resonating: the American experience should begin in the city where the country was founded. In 2018, nine of Philadelphia’s ‘top 10’ overseas markets grew year-on-year (YOY). Philadelphia’s top five markets include the United Kingdom, China, Germany, India, and France, respectively. Some of the notable highlights include:

• The United Kingdom delivered the highest number of overseas visitors to Philadelphia at 112,000 (a 3.1% YoY increase).

• China led all markets with $136 million in overall visitor spending (15.6% YoY increase), represented by 82,000 visitors, a 20% increase from 2017. Source : eturbo news

Dominican Republic Tourist Deaths

A graduation trip to the Dominican Republic for a group of 40 Oklahoma teenaged students from Deer Creek High School in Edmond went sour when earlier this month when they all became ill during their stay in the Caribbean country. One of the parents reported that they had traveled to the island nation on June 8 to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana. Fortunately, although they became ill, everyone survived.

To date, 7 Americans have died this year while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, all of them in their hotel rooms. June of 2018, Mark Hulburt Sr. (62) from Arizona was found dead by his wife in their Punta Cana hotel room. His wife said when she woke up that morning, he had something green coming from his mouth. His cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but with all these recent deaths under odd and similar circumstances, the family now suspects something else caused him to die. Hulbert’s son said they now wish they had brought his body home for an autopsy.

Joseph Allen (55) from New Jersey died on June 13 at the Terra Linda resort in Sosua, Dominican Republic. His sister said he had not been feeling well earlier but after leaving the pool, he showered and went out that night. He was found dead the next morning by hotel staff when he didn’t show up to meet his friends. Leyla Cox (53) from New York City died in her hotel room on June 10 at the Excellence Resorts in Punta Cana. According to the hotel, a forensics report states the cause of death as a heart attack. Her son has doubts about the hotel’s statement about what she died from.

Nathaniel Holmes (63) and Cynthia Day (49) both died in their hotel room on May 30 at the Grand Bahia Principe in La Romana. Hotel staff found them, and authorities stated they had both died from internal bleeding and fluid in their lungs. Authorities are trying to say that Nathaniel had an enlarged heart and cirrhosis and that Cynthia also had fluid in her brain.

Miranda Schaup-Werner (41) from Whitehall township, Pennsylvania, died on May 25 while also staying at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana. She and her husband Dan Werner were celebrating their wedding anniversary, and Miranda took a drink from the minibar then suddenly became ill and collapsed and died. The autopsy showed she died from a heart attack, pulmonary edema, and respiratory failure. John Corcoran (60) from New Jersey died at the end of April in his hotel room, which according to his sister, Shark Tank TV star Barbara Corcoran, was due to natural causes as he had an existing heart condition.

Naked Surfing and Nude Boogie Boarding make tourists take their clothes off

Visiting Hawaii and wanted to take your clothes off?  Nude surfing and naked boogie boarding in Hawaii are popular on Little Beach. Little Beach on Maui has been voted the best nude beach in Hawaii and is among the 10 most popular clothing optional beaches in the world according to nudist experts and Instagram star Svetlana Remus. Freezing Iceland is the best place for naked photos.Little Beach is where tourists visiting Hawaii go to get naked with a bunch of other visitors and on a stunning beach on Maui.

Some might argue in favor of the black sand beach at Kehena, but our pick for the best clothing-optional beach in Hawaii is along the soft white sands of Maui in a hidden, woodsy cove with big Pacific waves breaking on a turquoise shoreline. It’s every bit the Hawaiian vacation fantasy, minus the bathing suits. It can get crowded, and many of those visiting Maui want to take a look. Visitors enjoy going naked boogie -boarding and nude surfing from this beach.

lawsuits filed against Boeing in Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash

Additional wrongful death lawsuits in the crash of the Boeing 737-8 MAX, operated as Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, were filed in Chicago, IL, in the deaths of Virginia Chimenti, originally from Rome, Italy, and Ghislaine De Claremont, from Wallonia, Belgium. Chimenti and De Claremont were among the 157 people killed in the March 10, 2019 ET302 plane crash in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “We are seeking punitive damages because strong public policy in Illinois supports holding Boeing accountable for its intentional and grossly negligent conduct, in particular its refusal, even today, to admit that the grounded Boeing 737-8 MAX had any safety problems even while the plane is grounded and Boeing is being forced to finally fix the problem that has caused two aviation disasters in the short life of the airplane,” said Todd Smith, partner at Power Rogers & Smith L.L.P. “Boeing failed to properly brief its own test pilots regarding important details regarding MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), including its authority to quickly push down the nose of Boeing 737-8 MAX, and, accordingly the test pilots did not perform an adequate safety review of the system.”

“Boeing sold the Boeing 737-8 MAX to airlines despite knowing that a safety feature, known as the angle of attack disagree light, designed to immediately inform pilots that one of the airplane’s angle of attack sensors had failed, was not working in the airplane.”

“Boeing put its financial interests ahead of the safety of passengers and flight crews when it rushed the design, manufacture and certification of the Boeing 737-8 MAX, and when it misrepresented to the public, the FAA, and Boeing’s customers that the airplane was safe to fly, which Boeing shockingly continued to do even after the crash of ET302.”

“As a new feature, the design and functioning of MCAS was required to be reviewed and approved by the FAA, but a meaningful review of MCAS was not completed during the compliance activities that preceded the certification of the Boeing 737-8 MAX .

The lawsuits were filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by the New York-based law firm Kreindler & Kreindler LLP, along with co-counsels Chicago-based Power Rogers & Smith L.L.P., Fabrizio Arossa of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in Rome (on behalf of the family of Virginia Chimenti), and Jean-Michel Fobe of Sybarius Avocats, Brussels, Belgium (on behalf of the family of Ghislaine De Claremont). The defendants in the case are Chicago-based Boeing Company and Rosemount Aerospace, Inc. of Minnesota.

Two lawsuits were previously filed on May 2 on behalf of the family of Carlo Spini and his wife Gabriella Viciani, of the Arezzo Province of Italy, a physician and nurse who were en route to a humanitarian mission in Kenya. Chimenti devoted her life to fighting world hunger, and at 26 years old, was a consultant for United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP). While pursuing her bachelor’s degree at Bocconi University in Milan, she began working for an NGO in Nairobi, Kenya that protects vulnerable children living in Dandora slums. She earned her master’s degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and began working at the UN’s Capital Development Fund and the Agricultural Development Fund, directing her work at facilitating sustainable models in breaking cycles of poverty and starvation. She is survived by her parents and sister.

Ghislaine De Claremont was a personal banker at ING Bank in Wallonia, Belgium. She was a single parent who raised two daughters, one of whom became a paraplegic after she, her sister and her mother were caught in the crossfire of a shootout between police and violent criminals in 1995, striking Melissa Mairesse, the younger daughter, in the center of her spinal cord at the age of 10. Melissa was left wheelchair-bound and Ghislaine De Claremont cared for and advocated for her daughter’s special needs. Melissa, and her older sister, Jessica Mairesse, organized an African safari trip as a 60th birthday present to their devoted mother. De Claremont was on this trip when she was killed aboard flight ET302.

Justin Green, a Kreindler & Kreindler LLP partner and a military-trained pilot, said, “Boeing told the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that the Boeing 737-8 MAX’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) could not cause a catastrophic event if it malfunctioned and the FAA permitted Boeing to review the safety of the system with little or no FAA oversight. But MCAS is a deadly defective system that has already caused two airline disasters. Boeing designed its MCAS to automatically push the airplane’s nose down toward the ground based on the information supplied by a single angle of attack sensor. Boeing designed the MCAS so that it did not consider whether the angle of attack information was accurate or even plausible and did not consider whether the altitude of the airplane was above the ground. Boeing designed the system so that it would repeatedly push the nose down and would fight against the efforts of pilots trying to save the airplane. Boeing’s MCAS design permitted the failure of a single angle of attack sensor to cause two aviation disasters and is the worst design in the history of modern commercial aviation.”
