Countries with biggest tourism revenue losses due to COVID-19

Travel industry experts have looked into the biggest revenue loss and the highest percentage of GDP lost per country to reveal which countries have been financially impacted the most by the loss of tourism caused by COVID-19.

Travel and tourism has been one of the main industries to be gravely affected by COVID-19, leaving many countries with no choice but to close its borders to tourists for months due to the global pandemic outbreak. As a result of these travel bans, a number of airlines and tour operators have had to cancel long-awaited holidays, leaving world tourism at an all time low.

In 2019, global travel and tourism contributed $8.9 trillion to the world’s GDP, yet due to the current pandemic the financial impact of COVID-19 on world tourism has resulted in a total revenue loss of $195 billion worldwide in the first four months of 2020.

The countries with the biggest tourism revenue loss due to COVID-19:

Rank Country Revenue Loss
1 United States $30.7m
2 Spain $9.74m
3 France $8.77m
4 Thailand $7.82m
5 Germany $7.22m
6 Italy $6.18m
7 United Kingdom $5.81m
8 Australia $5.67m
9 Japan $5.42m
10 Hong Kong SAR, China $5.02m

In 2018, tourism supported 7.8 million jobs in the US and accounted for 2.8% of US GDP, but with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, they have placed top with a total revenue loss of $31 million in the first four months of 2020. By the end of March 2020, 31 out of 50 states in the US had been placed into lockdown, in the same month a travel ban prohibited anyone travelling from the Schengen zone, UK or Ireland to enter the US, having a major impact on tourism revenue.  Europe makes up half of the top 10 most financially impacted countries. Countries within Europe make up 50% of those which have suffered the biggest losses in tourism revenue, with Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the UK all ranking in the list of the top 10 worst affected.

With a reported drop of 98% in international tourist arrivals in June, Spain is the European country with the largest revenue loss of $9.74m. Just as tourists began returning to the popular holiday destination, a rise in COVID-19 cases meant the UK imposed a quarantine warning against anyone arriving back from Spain as of the end of July. This new rule indicates that Spain’s loss in revenue will continue increasing as tourism slows once again.

France is the world’s most visited country with over 89 million tourists each year, but the impact of COVID-19 has resulted in a total revenue loss of £8,767m. This significant loss makes it the third country in the world with the most revenue loss caused by the global pandemic and the second in Europe.

The countries which have lost the highest % of GDP due to loss of tourism:

Rank Country % of GDP loss
1 Turks and Caicos Islands 9.2%
2 Aruba 9.0%
3 Macao SAR, China 8.8%
4 Antigua and Barbuda 7.2%
5 Maldives 6.9%
6 St. Lucia 6.2%
7 Northern Mariana Islands 5.9%
8 Grenada 5.5%
9 Palau 5.2%
10 Seychelles 4.6%

Turks and Caicos Islands closed its border to tourists from 23rd March 2020 until 22nd July 2020, resulting in the collection of islands becoming the country to face the highest GDP loss of 9.2%. The Turks and Caicos economy is majoritively dependent on US tourism visiting the luxury holiday destination, meaning the travel ban is thought to have cost the country an estimated $22 million a month.

Also a well known luxury holiday destination located in the Southern Caribbean Sea, Aruba usually welcomes an estimated one million tourists to the small island each year. The impact of COVID-19 has caused the country to come in second as it suffers a 9% GDP loss.

Macau is known for being a hub for gambling, but with China’s ban on tourist visas and the severe impact COVID-19 has had on China as a whole, Macau’s gaming revenue falls 94.5% year-on-year in July. With gaming being a main source of tourism, Macau ranks third for the highest loss in GDP with a total percentage loss of 8.8%

Last year, more than 31 million people visited the Caribbean, and more than half of them were tourists from the US. But with COVID-19 causing travel bans all over the world, the number of tourists that once accounted for 50-90% of the GDP for most of the Caribbean countries has significantly decreased.

Countries within the Carribean make up 50% of those which have suffered the highest percentage loss in GDP, with Turks and Caicos Islands, Aruba, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia and Grenada all ranking in the list of the top 10 worst affected.

As travel came to a standstill for many months, countries around the world that rely on tourism for their economy and jobs are now seeing significant drops in revenue and GDP. Taking into account how travel and tourism contributes $8.9 trillion to the world’s GDP alone, it is devastating to see a total loss of $195 billion worldwide in the first four months of 2020 alone.

Tanzania hunts for tourist hotel investors in its new capital

Tanzania government had set open investment space for high-class hotels in the new capital city Dodoma, targeting to attract international visitors and investors to the new capital, lacking reliable and adequate accommodation facilities. The new capital city of Tanzania is lacking hotels with prestigious standards to accommodate diplomats, international business executives, and high-ranking officials touring the city for business, political and diplomatic gatherings.

Despite its current status, Dodoma has been developed with only three hotels of the Three Star Class. These are Fantasy Village (22 rooms), Nashera Hotel (52 rooms), and Dodoma Hotel (91 rooms).

According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (CSRC), more than 300,000,000 train fares have been sold after the sale of tickets for the Spring Festival travel launched on December 12, 2019.

Thanks to the nationwide promotion of electronic tickets, travelers can use their ID cards to enter and exit train stations instead of using paper tickets for boarding, according to the CSRC.

The upcoming Spring Festival holiday is a traditional time for family reunions, while the travel rush will last for 40 days from January 10 to February 18.

Thursday saw a single-day record of 16.33 million tickets sold for train journeys on January 31, the first working day after the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, the China’s railway operator said.

About 14.43 million tickets were sold via the official 12306 online booking services on Thursday, accounting for 88.4 percent of the total.

Popular trains of the day are return trips to major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with tickets almost sold out.

$1.5 billion Hawaii visitor spending up 6.3 percent in Hawaiian Islands

Visitors to the Hawaiian Islands spent a total of $1.50 billion in August 2019, an increase of 6.3 percent compared to August 2018, according to preliminary statistics released today by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA). It should be noted that August 2018’s results were partially impacted by concerns related to Hurricane Lane and the Kilauea eruption.

Tourism dollars from the Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) helped to fund numerous community events and initiatives across the state in August, including the Okinawan Festival, Duke’s OceanFest, the AVPFirst youth volleyball clinics on six islands, the Kauai Marathon & Half Marathon, and the Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival.

On a statewide level, average daily visitor spending declined (-1.2% to $191 per person) in August
year-over-year. Visitors from Canada (+6.0% to $178 per person), U.S. East (+4.1% to $206 per person) and U.S. West (+2.9% to $167) spent more per person, while visitors from All Other International Markets (-12.4% to $212) spent less. Average daily spending by Japanese visitors
(-0.3% to $224 per person) was similar to last year.

Total visitor arrivals increased 9.8 percent to 928,178 visitors in August. All visitor arrivals were via air service as no out-of-state cruise ships visited Hawaii this month. Total visitor days1 increased 7.6 percent. The statewide average daily census2, or the number of visitors on any given day in August, was 253,855, up 7.6 percent from last year.

Visitor arrivals by air service increased in August from U.S. West (+17.1% to 421,229), U.S. East (+16.5% to 202,223) and Canada (+2.0% to 28,716), but declined from Japan (-2.3% to 155,779) and All Other International Markets (-3.2% to 120,230) compared to a year ago.

In August, visitor spending increased from U.S. West (+17.1% to $578.6 million), U.S. East (+15.8% to $383.5 million) and Canada (+8.2% to $57.3 million), but declined from Japan (-1.2% to $225.4 million) and All Other International Markets (-16.0% to $256.8 million) compared to a year ago.

Among the four larger islands, Oahu saw increased visitor spending (+1.0% to $730.5 million) in August, boosted by growth in visitor arrivals (+7.7% to 577,384), which offset lower daily spending (-4.4%). On Maui, visitor spending grew (+14.0% to $404.8 million) with daily spending (+4.1%) and visitor arrivals also increasing (+11.3% to 273,786). The island of Hawaii recorded increases in visitor spending (+16.5% to $193.4 million), daily spending (+1.8%) and visitor arrivals (+18.4% to 158,972). Visitor spending on Kauai (+0.4% to $158.4 million) was comparable to the same period from a year ago, with growth in visitor arrivals (+4.7% to 120,679) offsetting a drop in daily spending (-3.5%).

A total of 1,212,926 trans-Pacific air seats serviced the Hawaiian Islands in August, up 4.3 percent from a year ago. Growth in air seats from U.S. East (+11.5%) and U.S. West (+8.1%) offset decreases from Canada (-11.0%), Other Asia (-9.5%), Oceania (-9.4%) and Japan (-6.0%).

Dominican Republic Tourist Deaths

A graduation trip to the Dominican Republic for a group of 40 Oklahoma teenaged students from Deer Creek High School in Edmond went sour when earlier this month when they all became ill during their stay in the Caribbean country. One of the parents reported that they had traveled to the island nation on June 8 to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana. Fortunately, although they became ill, everyone survived.

To date, 7 Americans have died this year while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, all of them in their hotel rooms. June of 2018, Mark Hulburt Sr. (62) from Arizona was found dead by his wife in their Punta Cana hotel room. His wife said when she woke up that morning, he had something green coming from his mouth. His cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but with all these recent deaths under odd and similar circumstances, the family now suspects something else caused him to die. Hulbert’s son said they now wish they had brought his body home for an autopsy.

Joseph Allen (55) from New Jersey died on June 13 at the Terra Linda resort in Sosua, Dominican Republic. His sister said he had not been feeling well earlier but after leaving the pool, he showered and went out that night. He was found dead the next morning by hotel staff when he didn’t show up to meet his friends. Leyla Cox (53) from New York City died in her hotel room on June 10 at the Excellence Resorts in Punta Cana. According to the hotel, a forensics report states the cause of death as a heart attack. Her son has doubts about the hotel’s statement about what she died from.

Nathaniel Holmes (63) and Cynthia Day (49) both died in their hotel room on May 30 at the Grand Bahia Principe in La Romana. Hotel staff found them, and authorities stated they had both died from internal bleeding and fluid in their lungs. Authorities are trying to say that Nathaniel had an enlarged heart and cirrhosis and that Cynthia also had fluid in her brain.

Miranda Schaup-Werner (41) from Whitehall township, Pennsylvania, died on May 25 while also staying at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana. She and her husband Dan Werner were celebrating their wedding anniversary, and Miranda took a drink from the minibar then suddenly became ill and collapsed and died. The autopsy showed she died from a heart attack, pulmonary edema, and respiratory failure. John Corcoran (60) from New Jersey died at the end of April in his hotel room, which according to his sister, Shark Tank TV star Barbara Corcoran, was due to natural causes as he had an existing heart condition.
