At 18, Sara Stelzer was in the prime of her life — a college freshman excited for her classes and being part of a sorority at San Diego State University — when she suddenly became very ill. She called her parents on a Sunday night in the fall of 2014 to tell them she had a headache. By Monday morning, it seemed like Sara had the flu. Her parents told her to pick up some Theraflu and get some rest.

But then things suddenly took a turn for the worse. Sara’s father Greg got a text from one of her friends, saying that his daughter was in the emergency room. Greg and Sara’s mom, Laurie, immediately drove to the hospital. “Every bit of information that we got along that ride was worse than the last piece of information,” Laurie tells Yahoo Lifestyle. The parents tried to reassure themselves by focusing on the fact that Sara was a healthy teenager who had never been seriously sick before. “They’ll save her and she’ll be fine,” Greg recalls thinking.

By the time Sara’s parents arrived at the hospital, their daughter was in a coma in the intensive care unit (ICU). The neurosurgeon told them that they weren’t seeing any brain activity and that they believed she had bacterial meningitis. “We just didn’t know anything about bacterial meningitis,” says Laurie. “We didn’t know to even ask about those symptoms.” Sara’s parents would soon learn that bacterial meningitis moves swiftly and can be life threatening if not treated immediately. In Sara’s case, it was too late to save her life. After losing their youngest child, whom Laurie describes as “tall, beautiful, vibrant — really a ray of sunshine,” she says: “It was a very hard hole to come out of.”

Although Sara had previously received the meningitis vaccine, it was only for the “A, C, W and Y strain — not for the B strain,” notes Laurie. “They came out with the meningitis B vaccine shortly after she passed away.”

Laurie shares that because the meningitis B vaccine isn’t mandated, many teens and young adults are unknowingly unprotected against the dangerous disease.

According to the National Meningitis Association (NMA), teens should ideally ask for the meningitis B vaccine at their 16-year doctor’s visit. In fact, one of the most at-risk groups are teens and young adults ages 16 to 23, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and people who live in crowded settings such as college dorms. The NMA also suggests that teens get the second dose of the meningitis ACWY vaccine at the 16-year visit and get both shots at the same time in order to simplify the process.

There is also a second dose of the meningitis B vaccine. “The timing of the second dose varies slightly depending on which brand of B vaccine a patient’s healthcare provider uses, so patients should follow the direction of their healthcare provider,” according to the NMA.

To honor Sara’s memory and to spare other parents the pain of suddenly losing a child to the disease, Laurie and Greg have been dedicating themselves to raising awareness of meningitis B — including teaching the signs and symptoms to look out for — and the importance of getting teens vaccinated.

Meningitis B outbreaks occurred on 20 different U.S. college campuses from March 2013 to November 2017, according to the NMA. Some schools are starting to take action. Starting in the fall of 2019, San Diego State University will require that students 23 years old and younger be vaccinated against meningitis B before starting college. “We hope that eventually all schools require all incoming freshman to be vaccinated,” says Greg.

The father also has a message for teens and young adults: “For all the young students out there, our daughter was just like you…was healthy, was in the prime of her life,” Greg says. “And in a matter of a few days, she died from bacterial meningitis. I encourage all those students, for her sake, to get vaccinated.”

The morning of March 10, 2019 will remain a chilling memory for the families of the 157 passengers and crew killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed to the ground, nose first.

Attorneys representing crash victim Isabella Beryl Achieng Jaboma’s family say the tragedy could have been prevented, and seek to hold The Boeing Company – which manufactured the 737 Max aircraft – accountable for its reckless actions. They filed a lawsuit against Boeing today in Cook County – home of the company’s global headquarters – and seek one billion dollars in damages for the grievous loss their clients are suffering because of Boeing’s outrageous actions.

“If ever there was a case in which a corporate defendant should be held accountable for its reckless and negligent acts committed in putting profits ahead of people, this is that case,” said attorney Willie E. Gary, who filed the case for Jaboma’s family along with attorneys Larry A. Strauss and Candice Diah of Gary, Williams, Parenti, Watson & Gary, PLLC, along with co-counsel Chuck Chionuma of Chionuma Law Firm, LLC. 

Jaboma’s father, Jaboma Banda Ochuodho Philip Akeyo, brother Allan Onyango Jaboma and her New York-based cousin George Omondi serve as the plaintiffs for Jaboma’s case. 

“Boeing knew its plane had problems – the exact same 737-8 Max model plane crashed off Indonesia and killed 189 people just a few months before this one,” Gary said, referring to the Lion Air Flight JT610 

crash that occurred on October 29, 2018. “Instead of putting safety first and grounding the planes, Boeing told the world its planes were perfectly safe to fly. If its planes were flying, Boeing’s profits kept soaring.”

Five months later, however, another Boeing 737-8 Max jet crashed – just six minutes after departing Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with Jaboma and 156 others on board.

Jaboma, lovingly referred to as “Bella” by her family and friends, graduated summa cum laudefrom the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton.  After working for the Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA) humanitarian relief organization for just four months, the 32-year-old Kenyan was thrilled to attend a conference in Cairo on RACIDA’s behalf.  She was returning home to Nairobi from the conference aboard Flight 302.  Bella was Akeyo and wife Abigael’s only daughter, and the primary caregiver to her younger brother who has Down syndrome and lived with her. Before RACIDA, Bella had been volunteering at Kenya Hope for Cancer Kids for four years. She had only just begun her career and was establishing a better life for herself and her brother. 

“As I talk to families who are still struggling to understand why this happened, they are wracked with grief while pondering the hell their loved ones experienced as Flight 302 was nose diving toward the ground.  Boeing placed more emphasis on profits than the safety of those on board their aircraft, and as a result, hundreds of lives have been lost,” said Attorney Gary.

“American corporations operating in Africa often skirt the law, because rules and regulatory agencies may be lax or non-existent, the government lacks the resources – or worse, is corrupt,” said co-counsel Chuck Chionuma, who is originally from Umuahia, Nigeria. “We intend to make sure Boeing pays for the suffering it is causing.”

While Bella’s family continues to mourn the loss of their beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend, their attorneys are demanding answers and seeking justice to ensure that Bella’s life was not lost in vain.

Moscow : A man was filmed trying to board a plane to Crimea in a Moscow airport after stripping in public. Footage from the scene shows the man getting in line stark naked. Covering his private parts, he calmly waited for his turn as others passed through the final check. It was not clear what the man had in mind, but he crossed himself several times as the line moved forward. He stood in the line for the ticket check fully nude, before bewildered police detained him. At first, it seemed like a typical Saturday at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport. Passengers were lining up near the jet bridge to board a plane for the city of Simferopol in Crimea. During the entire process, the naked man acted as if nothing were amiss. Other passengers didn’t pay much attention to him either, apart from giggling. According to one witness, the man explained his stunt by saying that “clothes make body aerodynamics worse” so “it’s easier to fly” nude.

The man was later detained by police and is set to be examined for his mental condition. The airline, whose aircraft he attempted to board, told local media that the individual undressed in public and ran past its staff. “He failed to reach the plane,” the company’s spokesperson said. Not a lot is known about his identity, except that police say he is 38 years old and was born in Siberia.
