An architect asked AI to design skyscrapers of the future

Manas Bhatia has a bold vision of the future — one where residential skyscrapers covered in trees, plants and algae act as “air purification towers.”
In a series of detailed images, the New Delhi-based architect and computational designer has brought the idea to life. His imagined buildings are depicted rising high above a futuristic metropolis, their curved forms inspired by shapes found in nature.
But the pictures were not entirely of his own imagination.

The architect’s conceptual towers were created using AI imaging software. Credit: Courtesy Manas Bhatia

For his conceptual project, “AI x Future Cities,” Bhatia turned to an artificial intelligence imaging tool, Midjourney, that generates elaborate pictures based on written prompts. Using a series of text descriptions — featuring phrases like “futuristic towers,” “utopian technology,” “symbiotic,” and “bioluminescent material” — Midjourney yielded a series of digital images that Bhatia further tweaked by honing the prompts.
Bhatia said it can take up to 20 minutes to make each of the surreal artworks. He refined his descriptions almost 100 times per project, editing and adding to the text until he achieved the desired results before cleaning up the images using Photoshop.
“The trial-and-error part is the most fun,” the architect said over the phone. “We use AI to create images and, in the process, the AI trains itself and improves over time.”

Five tourists killed trying to climb active volcano in Russia

Five tourists were killed, and one was severely injured today after falling from ‘great height’ in an attempt to scale the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano in Russia’s Far East.

At 4,649 meters in height, Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia. It’s located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, a remote area in Russia’s Far East that hosts more than a hundred volcanoes, including 29 active ones. Russia’s federal investigative committee reported that the tragedy happened when a group of climbers was at an altitude of around 13,600 feet (4,150 meters), attempting to climb the volcano. “According to preliminary data, five people have died after falling from great height,” the committee’s report said, adding that another climber has been severely injured and remains unconscious.

One of the guides who accompanied the tourists also fractured his leg, with his colleague calling for help via a satellite phone, the officials said. WTM London 2022 will be taking place from 7-9 November 2022.

Emergency Ministry’s rescuers have been dispatched to the Klyuchevskaya Sopka, but with the altitude being too high for the helicopter to reach, they would have to walk to the site of the accident by foot up from 10.800 feet (3,300 meters).    According to the information available at the moment, the climbers in the ill-fated group had arrived from different parts of Russia, including the capital city of Moscow, their climb being organized by a tour operator from the Siberian city of Novosibirsk.

A criminal case on inflicting death by negligence over the incident has been opened by Russian law enforcement officials.

China warns of ‘counter-measures’ as US approves $1.1bn arms sales to Taiwan

China has warned the United States it will take “counter-measures” after the Biden administration approved more than $1.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan.

Chinese embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu said Saturday China was “firmly opposed” to the sales, which “severely jeopardize China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” and called on Washington to “immediately revoke” them.
Liu’s comments on Twitter came after the Biden administration on Friday formally notified Congress of the proposed sales, which include up to 60 anti-ship missiles and up to 100 air-to-air missiles.
The State Department said the sales are in line with a longstanding US policy of providing defensive weapons to the island and described the “swift provision” of such arms as being “essential for Taiwan’s security.”
China, however, has accused the US of interfering in what it sees as its internal affairs.
China’s Communist Party claims Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, as part of its territory — despite never having governed it — and has long vowed to “reunify” the island with the Chinese mainland, by force if necessary.
“The US interferes in China’s internal affairs and undermines China’s sovereignty and security interests by selling arms to Taiwan,” Liu tweeted.
“It sends the wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and severely jeopardizes China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” Liu said.
He called on the US to “honor its commitments to the one-China principle” and ended his series of tweets by saying Taiwan is “an inalienable part of the Chinese territory” and warned China will “resolutely take legitimate and necessary counter-measures.”
Biden administration approves more than $1.1B in arms sales to Taiwan

US-China tensions have spiked since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last month.
China had warned Pelosi against making the trip, and responded by ordering days’ worth of military drills around the island after she had left.
Taiwan said Saturday it “highly welcomes” the latest arms sales and thanked the US government for “continuing to implement its security commitments to Taiwan.”
“In response to China’s recent continuous military provocations and unilateral changes in the status quo and creating crises, Taiwan’s determination to defend itself is extremely firm,” Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Saturday.
“This batch of arms sales includes a large number of various types of missiles that are needed to strengthen Taiwan’s self-defense, which fully demonstrates that the great importance the US government attaches to Taiwan’s defense needs, assisting our country to obtain the equipment needed for defense in a timely manner and to enhance our national defense capabilities.”
In an incident that underscored the heightened tensions, Taiwan’s military shot down a drone hovering over one of its island outposts just off the Chinese coast on Thursday.
A day earlier, Taiwan said it had warned off drones hovering over three of the islands it occupies off the coast of the Chinese port city of Xiamen. Source : CNN News

As harvest time looms, China tells farmers to replant or switch crops

China, Aug 26 As China’s record heatwave starts to subside, farmers are assessing the damage caused by a prolonged drought and the government is urging them to replant or switch crops where they can.

More than 70 days of extreme temperatures and low rainfall have wreaked havoc along the basin of the Yangtze, which supports more than 450 million people as well as a third of the country’s crops. Though rain is expected over the coming 10 days, farmers near the depleted Poyang Lake in central China’s Jiangxi province, normally a flood outlet for the Yangtze, worry that the heat has already done too much damage. “We can’t switch to other crops because there’s no land,” said Hu Baolin, a 70-year old farmer in a village on the outskirts of Nanchang, Jiangxi’s provincial capital. He said his plants, including rapeseed oil and sesame, were far less developed compared to normal years, and his pomelos were just a third of their usual size.

“Don’t let people see it and think I brought you here on purpose. You can go anywhere you like (in this village), it’s all the same.” The agriculture ministry said on Tuesday that the hot weather posed a “serious threat” to autumn grain production and urged local governments to “do everything possible” to find more water. Drones were deployed in the worst hit province of Sichuan in China’s southwest on Thursday to seed clouds and induce rain, while other regions along the Yangtze have been mobilising firefighters to spray parched crops, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Nearby wells were severely depleted, and a gaggle of geese milled around a pond that had completely dried up around 10 days ago. Villagers had also been battling a brush fire nearby. The agriculture ministry in an emergency notice on Tuesday called on farmers to harvest and store rice and take action to strengthen grain growth in coming weeks. In areas where the drought has already inflicted heavy damage, farmers are encouraged to switch to late-autumn crops like sweet potatoes, but that is no easy task.

Analysts saw rice production as the most vulnerable. “I think the biggest impact of the heatwave is going to be on the rice crop – corn also has issues but not that much,” said Ole Houe, director of advisory services at agriculture brokerage IKON Commodities in Sydney. China, the world’s biggest rice consumer and importer, was already expected to import a record 6 million tonnes in 2022/23, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Chongqing and Sichuan province in the southwest are reeling after more than two weeks of temperatures in excess of 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) – causing crop damage, forest fires and power rationing.

Low rainfall has also affected the Yangtze’s lower reaches, including Zhejiang and Jiangsu on the eastern coast. Water levels at Lake Tai, sandwiched between the two provinces, have fallen to their lowest in 20 years despite the diversion of 500 million cubic metres of Yangtze river since mid-July, the Ministry of Water Resources said on Thursday. China’s water ministry said on Aug. 11 that the drought had already affected nearly 33 million mu (22,000 square kilometres) of arable land and 350,000 livestock, but the final impact is likely to be far bigger.

Factories in Chongqing were originally ordered to restrict output from Aug. 17 until Aug. 24 in order to save power, but curbs have now been extended and normal operations will not resume until weather conditions improve and authorities approve restarts. Although national forecasters reduced their heat alert level from “red” to “orange” from Tuesday, temperatures are still expected to exceed 40C in some places in Chongqing, neighbouring Sichuan and other parts of the Yangtze delta until the weekend.

Afghanistan Tourism is back in a new and safe

Visit with the Taliban. A new cultural experience is waiting for visitors ready to experience Afghanistan under Taliban rule. The former Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism is now the Ministry of Information and Culture. The website of the Afghan Tourist Organization (ATO) says it has some good reasons why travelers should visit Afghanistan. Unfortunately, such reasons are not directly listed.

The tourism board explains that Afghanistan is located in Central Asia and is a historical and ancient country before and after Islam. It says Afghanistan is connected now to south Asia. Kunar is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan located in the northeastern part of the country. Its capital is Asadabad. Its population is estimated to be 508,224. Kunar’s major political groups include Wahabis or Ahl-e- Hadith, Nazhat-e Hambastagi Milli, Hezb-e Afghanistan Naween, Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin. The number of domestic tourists visiting eastern Kunar province has spiked recently, local officials said a month ago.

According to today’s follow-up report in the government-owned Kabul Times, more than 90,000 tourists visited scenic and mountainous Kunar province alone. In other parts of the country, thousands of domestic and international tourists have been seen visiting ancient areas and recreational sites after firm security restoration in the country. In the past, prevailing insecurity along the roads and highways prevented both domestic and foreign visitors from traversing, but now the Taliban rule is explained as the Islamic Emirates security is back for the Afghanistan travel and tourism industry. Kunar province has beautiful recreational sites with many historical areas for travelers.

The government newspaper says Afghanistan, including the capital city of Kabul, is safe, and international investments are pouring in. The article concluded that cooperation of the people with their new Islamic system was most needed and is now essential for the restoration of the country. The world is gaining confidence in this new and more secure Afghanistan. The first passenger flight after the revolution was operated by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in September 2021 has already taken place.
